The Metabolism of Mucopolysaccharides in Animals
نویسندگان
چکیده
The turnover of the acid mucopolysaccharides, hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitinsulfuric acid (CSA), of skin has been studied in normal rats (1) and in animals treated with the adrenocortical hormones, 17-hydroxycorticosterone and 11-dehydro-17-hydroxycorticosterone (2). It was shown that the administration of these adrenal steroids to otherwise normal rats resulted in a decreased turnover of the mucopolysaccharides of skin. The possibility that insulin participates in the metabolism of acid mucopolysaccharides was suggested by the finding that both the uranic acid and hexosamine moieties of HA derive from glucose (3-5). Since insulin regulates the utilization of glucose, it seemed reasonable to postulate a role for insulin in the biosynthesis of the mucopolysaccharides. It is the purpose of this paper to present evidence that mucopolysaccharide metabolism is impaired in the skin of alloxan-diabetic rats and is restored toward normal by insulin administration. A portion of this investigation was published previously in preliminary form (6).

Several modalities of drug administration have been investigated to improve bioavailability and to reduce 5-FU related toxicity. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effect of skimmed milk on the absorption and metabolism of 5-FU in rabbits, mice and dogs. It was further aimed to determine its route related toxicity in rabbits. Plasma concentration of both 5-FU and its metabolit...
متن کاملMyocardial connective tissue metabolism in response to injury. II. Investigation of the mucopolysaccharides involved in isoproterenol-induced necrosis and repair in rat hearts.
Myocardial necrosis was produced in rats by administering isoproterenol, and the increase in hexosamine-containing materials in the injured myocardium was investigated. Total hexosamine, galactosamine, neutral sugars, and uronic acids were determined on various fractions isolated from the hearts. Mucopolysaccharides were precipitated as the cetyl pyridinium chloride complex and fractionated acc...

While fasting has been practiced for centuries, its beneficial effects was unknown until recently. This review tries to analyze the current literature of how fasting and intermittent fasting (IF) could affect clinical pathological parameters, learning, mood and brain plasticity. The effects of different ways of fasting on metabolism and stress were also explored. Animal experiments have elucida...
متن کاملThe effect of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in rat
Several studies have shown that stress has major effects on metabolism. There is also some evidence indicating that stress may induce diabetes mellitus. The present study has investigated the role of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in male Wistar rats (250 ± 50 g). Animals were divided into control and test groups (n = 8/group). Blood samples were obtained by tail snippi...
